With a record number of reregistered runners braving a steady
rain, The Girl Scout Council of the Apalachee Bend held the 14th
Annual Run For the Cookies Saturday, February 11. The race was
sponsored by the Council, Gulf Winds Track Club, and Girl Scout
Cadette Troop 560 and Senior Troop 636. Held at Tallahassee
Community College Lifetime Sports Complex the event included a
one-mile race, followed by a 5K. Runners came from all across
the Big Bend area and several neighboring states. All race
participants received a t-shirt and 5K runners were treated to
the season’s first boxes of Girl Scout Cookies. There were more
than 20 different age group categories, with top three finishers
in each group receiving Girl Scout cookies as awards.
The run marked the arrival of cookies which will be available
now through March 5th. Proceeds from the event will benefit Girl
Scout Cadette Troop 560 and Senior Troop 636.
“We have been working hard for over three years to raise money
to attend the Girl Scout Cabana in Cuernavaca, Mexico” stated
Amanda McCartney, Girl Scout Troop 560 in Tallahassee. “Once we
are there we will meet Girl Scouts from all over the world, and
participate in cultural projects, including crafts, songs,
service projects in the local communities, flag ceremonies, and
visits to places of historical interest.”

Members of Troop 82 celebrate their win as the
Girl Scout Troop with the most participants.

GSCAB History Task Group Co-Chair Josephine
Newton receives her cookies for
placing first in her respective age category in the 5K run.
