Brave New Girl - 2008 Summer Camp
General Information

Camp Staff
Camp staff members are carefully selected for their skills, experience, and maturity. We look for their ability to serve as role models and a genuine desire to work with children. All staff are screened by Florida Department of Law Enforcement. Counselors must be at least 18; unit leaders must be at least 21 years of age. All staff attend a pre-camp training which includes, but is not limited to, camp skills, Girl Scout programs, safety and emergency procedures, and human development skills such as dealing with homesick campers, Certification in First Aid and CPR, team building, and age characteristics of girls. Staff supervising aquatic activities, horseback riding, and archery are required to have additional specialized training.

Health and Safety
Your child’s safety and health are our top priority. Each camp meets standards set by Girl Scouts of the USA and conforms to regulations of the State of Florida. Every night the main gate is locked. Local law enforcement patrol daily. Red Cross and Safety-Wise safety regulations are observed during all activities including swimming and canoeing. Health and accident insurance covers all campers. This cost is included in the Girl Scout membership fee. Pre-existing illnesses or conditions are not covered. Camp is staffed by a Level II First Aider or nurse. Staff is First Aid/CPR certified. A local physician is on call at all times. All medications are to be turned in at the Health Clinic. Campers will be assisted in taking medication only if the medication is:

  • in its original container
  • includes detailed written instructions
  • prescribed for her by a physician
  • or over the counter and approved by parent or guardian.

Resident campers receive a health screening upon arrival. The health director looks for illness, injury, or communicable disease and verifies health information.

Cost of Camp
There is a nonrefundable deposit of $30 for each camp your child is applying for. This deposit is due with applications, including requests for camperships. The balance of the camp fee for any session is due three weeks prior to the opening of the session for which the camper has applied. If the balance is not received on time, camp registration may be canceled without notice. Camp fees may be paid using Visa, MasterCard, cash, check, money order, cookie bucks, and/or nutty bucks.

Registration
Sessions are available to girls who have completed at least kindergarten and no higher than eleventh grade by the summer. There is one day camp available for girls entering kindergarten. Fill out the registration form, enclose payment for at least the deposit, and mail to GSCAB Attn: Camp, 250 Pinewood Dr., Tallahassee, FL 32303. Registration closes when sessions are full or three (3) weeks before the session begins (whichever is first).

Trading Post
Our camp store, the Trading Post, allows campers to purchase t-shirts, patches, stationery, and other novelties. A credit in your child’s name enables her to make purchases at the Trading Post without the worry of handling money. Trading Post credit may be left during camp check-in or pre-paid with registration or fee balance. The average deposit is $20. Unused money will be given back to you when your child leaves camp.

My child is not a registered Girl Scout.
All girls are welcome to attend our camps regardless of race, religion, color, national origin or socio-economic background. If a girl who is not a registered Girl Scout wishes to attend camp, the additional cost is $10 (the Girl Scout membership fee).

Refund Policy
Fees are refundable (except deposit & $10 non-Girl Scout Fee) if the council is notified in writing two (2) weeks before the session is scheduled to begin. Any refund or overpayment will be refunded after the camping session. For campers not attending due to illness, the camp fee (minus deposit & non-Girl Scout Fee) will be refunded only with a doctor’s written note.

Campership/Financial Assistance

All camper's must wear a Personal Flotation Device (provided by camp) while on the water.

Camper Behavior
Camp life is an excellent opportunity for girls to live and work together. Camp is also a comm-unity of many people and certain standards of behavior are expected. The director and staff will do everything possible to help girls adjust to camp life. However, the Girl Scouts of the Apalachee Bend, Inc. reserves the right to send any girl who consistently misbehaves, who willfully disobeys camp rules, or whose behavior towards others is unacceptable home. No refunds will be given for girls who are sent home due to behavior issues. The girl’s parent/guardian is responsible for picking her up from camp.
